Eagle Scouts: A Legacy of Values-Based Leadership and Service

Abstract

Through the Scouting programme, Eagle Scouts build character and lifelong strengths that set them apart. To better understand these advantages, Scouting America partnered with The Harris Poll to survey thousands of adults and study how Eagle Scouts compare to people who have not participated in Scouting. The study found that Eagle Scouts generally have a more positive outlook in areas of: Well-being & outlook on life, and health and activities. They also found Eagle Scouts to be more proactive in leadership behaviours and community engagement - with a vast majority living by strong character & values.

Relevance to Scouting

This study provides evidence on the potential long-term benefits associated with participation in Scouting, particularly in the development of character, leadership and community engagement. The findings suggest that Eagle Scouts report positive outcomes in areas such as well-being, health, leadership behaviours and commitment to strong values. For NSOs, the study can help illustrate the potential lifelong impact of Scouting and the value of providing young people with opportunities to develop character, take on leadership responsibilities, engage with their communities and build positive habits that can extend beyond their time in Scouting.
