Abstract

This research examines the sense of community experienced by members of the Scout movement in the Ñuble province, Chile. Conducted in 2014 within the field of psychology, the study uses a qualitative methodology to explore the complex and subjective realities of human experience. Its main objective is to understand how Scouts construct a sense of community, with particular attention to aspects such as belonging and territoriality. Data were collected through social psychology and ethnographic methods, including field observation and focus groups, allowing direct access to participants’ perspectives. The investigation draws on the researcher’s personal experience and the longstanding social relevance of Scouting in Chile and worldwide. The study situates these experiences within theoretical frameworks addressing community, belonging, territoriality, and life experience, highlighting how the Scout movement fosters social cohesion and collective values in contrast to the individualism of contemporary capitalist society. Ultimately, the research seeks to document and analyze how Scouts contribute to community life and uphold values of social and environmental responsibility.

Relevance to Scouting

This research is highly relevant to Scouting as it provides an in-depth understanding of how the movement fosters a sense of community, belonging, and social responsibility among its members. By highlighting the ways Scouts experience collective identity and engagement within their local contexts, the study underscores the educational and social value of Scouting as a non-formal learning environment. In a society increasingly driven by individualism, these insights demonstrate how Scouting nurtures cooperative values, environmental awareness, and civic participation, offering evidence of its continued importance in promoting social cohesion and preparing young people to contribute meaningfully to their communities.
