The Influence of Scouting Attributes on Leadership Performance: Implications for an Enhanced Scouting Program
Abstract
This descriptive-correlational study examined the relationship between Scouting attributes and leadership performance among Senior Scouts in the Philippines. The findings showed very high levels of Scouting attributes and strong leadership performance, with a positive relationship between them. The study highlights Scouting’s potential to support leadership development through values, practical skills, service, outdoor activities, personal growth and reflection. It also led to the development of an Enhanced Scouting Program designed to further strengthen leadership development among Senior Scouts.
Relevance to Scouting
Leadership development is a central aspect of the educational potential of Scouting. This study is relevant to Scouting because it explores how participation in Scouting and the development of character-related attributes are associated with young people's leadership performance. Approaches presented can provide useful ideas for those designing or reviewing youth leadership opportunities within Scouting. For NSOs with similar contexts, this may be a useful resource.
